Anni Snyman > Curriculum Vitae

Anni Snyman (b. 17 June 1964)
BA Fine Art (Graphic Design) University of Stellenbosch 1985

I worked as a Graphic Designer for several years. Whilst I enjoyed the visual-verbal connection embedded in the design process, I didn’t care much for the commercial message or the inevitable chase after deadlines and money.

I found myself drawn towards searching for a deeper understanding of creativity and ways to ‘teach’ it more successfully. Thus I researched and taught creative process for most of the Nineteen-Nineties at the AAA School of Advertising and Vega, The School of Brand Communication. Eventually, I initiated the first ‘Imagination lab’ under the watchful eyes of Gordon Cook (2003).

During that time, my own creative process also started to develop. I first exhibited with the Printer’s guild (Pretoria Art Society - 1999, The State Theatre - 2000) and took part in Vega Staff exhibitions (2001, 2002). The Icarus and Pandora Dialogues (2002) with Chris Diedericks at The Art Space and Merely Mortal initiated me into the world of serious artmaking.

Since then I have conceptualised, curated and produced art for Searching for a Saviour (Museum Africa - 2004) and Ansisters (The Old Fort, Constitution Hill - 2005), two collaborative ‘kunstellasies’ involving many other artists and several different creative disciplines.

I spent August 2006 in New York as a fellow of the Ampersand Foundation and in November of the same year showed Memory of Water at the University of Johannesburg Art Gallery. The exhibition and opening event featured wonderful contributions by Boitumelo, Janine Lewis (Seity), katty vandenberghe and Retief van Wyk.

In the course of 2007 the first thoughts regarding trans_end started brewing, which katty vandenberghe is co-ordinating as a cyber-constellation. In response to this project, I have been working on a novel entitled Jam (2008/9) as well as developing interactive workshop material and concepts for Creative Disobedience (2008/9)with Eugenie Grobler and planning a land art installation – Siren (2009).
