Last night
I counted my offspring:
Chameleons
Seven; or nine
all sleek and colourful
Alive
like fruit

except
for the stillborn skeleton
in the chickensoup
that I couldn’t eat.

And I was looking
for somewhere safe
(behind your back)
to set them free.
